Life in the Balance (2023)
"Life in the Balance," a driftwood and bark bird installation, was featured at the 2023 California State Fair and awarded the Juror's Select Award of Excellence. The sculpture is created from carefully selected pieces of driftwood and bark, each chosen for its unique texture and natural beauty. The materials were arranged and sculpted to form birds in motion-capturing the delicate balance of life and nature.
The driftwood, smoothed and shaped by the elements, brings a sense of organic movement to the installation, while the bark adds depth and intricate detail. The materials were thoughtfully preserved to maintain their raw, natural qualities, with some pieces left intentionally weathered to highlight the passage of time. The birds, with their delicate form and positioning, appear to be both in mid-flight and perched, emphasizing the fragility and balance inherent in the natural world.
This labor-intensive process involved both creative vision and technical skill, transforming bark and driftwood into a cohesive and dynamic piece that speaks to the interconnectedness of all living things.
